The U. S. Food and Drug Administration announced today that it has approved the use of sildenafil, marketed as Viagra, for the treatment of erectile dysfunction (ED) in men.
Sildenafil, marketed as Viagra, is an oral medication that belongs to the class of drugs known as phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitors. In the U. S., erectile dysfunction is a condition in which the penis becomes swollen, painful and stiff. This can lead to impotence or decreased sexual desire. A Texas man is accused of ordering a bottle of Viagra in Houston, according to court records.
The man was charged with one count of importing prescription drugs into the United States, while two others charged with conspiracy were arrested.
The federal district court in Houston said he purchased anabolic steroids in Houston for $10. The steroid product was delivered to his home at a cost of $2,000. The man then used that money to purchase the drugs and then sold the drugs to his friends at a local brothel in Houston.
The case was transferred to U. S. District Judge David B. Cunha.
In April, the Houston-based federal case manager filed a motion to dismiss the indictment, claiming he purchased a counterfeit steroid product without the permission of his wife. His client denied the allegations and instead agreed to pay a $10,000 fine.
He also pleaded guilty to conspiracy and money laundering.
A federal judge denied the motion to dismiss the case, ruling there was insufficient evidence to support the charges.
The case was transferred to a U. District Court.
The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Robert E. Segal of the National Bureau ofvd.i.s., Homeland Security Investigations, Houston, Texas.
